About Renaissance Era Clothing - How To Choose
The Upper Class:
This is the stereotypical Renaissance. Style is very important, and both men and women in the Renaissance wore clothing we would consider
costumes. Renaissance costume
appears to be highly constrictive and extremely uncomfortable. At the same time, the costumes tend to be ornate, with rich fabrics and detail. Most of the examples we have of Renaissance
clothing are from paintings. Historians and artists generally do not record the activities of the
lower classes.
The Middle Class:
The middle class as a social entity began to rise to prominence during the renaissance period.
The middle class attempted to emulate the style and line of the upper classes, but with humbler fabrics. Those within the middle class may be merchants, or others who were able to earn a decent living. An example may be a merchant's wife in a high-necked bodice and farthingale with over and underskirts. Made from
simple linen or fine wool, these garments were beautiful, just less ornate. Her lace simply may not be as elaborate as a
noble lady's. The merchant would be wearing a handsome black ensemble featuring the fanciest fabric that he could afford.
The Lower Class:
Clothing in the Renaissance for everyday became less like 'costumes' for the lower class. A peasant woman would wear simple clothing that is more functional for daily wear. Peasant men would also wear simple clothing, with loose-fitting lace shirts as a hallmark item.
